This mandatory death sentence remained federal law until 1898. In several cases at Fort Smith, Judge Parker petitioned the President on behalf of defendants sentenced to death. Any crime in Indian Territory with a non-tribal member involved became a federal case. This led to a large number of criminal cases, including those with the death penalty.Remembered today simply as 'the Hanging Judge,' Isaac Parker grew up on an Ohio farm. He became a frontier attorney and had a thirty-five-year career in public service. He served as a city attorney, state judge, two-term representative to Congress.
