No one is calling all women "birth-givers." It makes sense to have a gender-neutral term for folks who give birth and menstruate since trans men and some nonbinary folks can do both and since sometimes both of a child's parents are women ("mother" doesn't cut it if a doctor is trying to articulate which woman is giving birth!).
